Boost Brain Power With Omega 3

Research has shown that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help to boost brain power and prevent diseases and health problems such as dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADHD, dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.

The brain is made up of about 60 % fatty acids and studies have shown that a diet that contains a high concentration of omega 3's (especially DHA) seems to help in the development process of the brain and also tends to stave off dementia.

The British Broadcasting Corporation's "The Human Mind" TV series featured evidence that a diet supplemented with fish oil (which is very rich in omega 3's) can boost children's reading, writing and concentration skills. DHA seems to play the most important role in the brain development process in infants and children and affects cognitive functioning throughout life.

Another interesting experiment was carried out in 12 Durham schools, which clearly strengthen the connection between fish oils and mental health.

120 Children at the age of 6 - 11 with learning difficulties and problems with concentration, reading, handwriting or spelling were selected for the study. More than 40% of the children improved their scores in intelligence tests and 25% showed reading age improvements of between 18 months and 4.5 years

Another report published by the "American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions" stated the ability of omega 3's in fish oil to fend off Alzheimer.

The research showed that eating about three fish meals a week, which leads to increased blood levels of DHA, are associated with a significant 48 per cent reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.

The highest concentration of DHA omega 3 fatty acids can be found in fatty fish, like salmon, herring and mackerel. For those who don't like to eat fish, omega 3 fish oil capsules or other omega 3 supplements provide an interesting alternative.
