There is strong evidence that consumption of nutrients rich in omega 3 fatty acids, such as cold water fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts and others hold significant health benefits.
Some of the reported benefits are: Reduced thrombotic infarction, help by hypertension, lower risk of breast cancer, may help by depression. Other benefits include: Lower blood pressure, less chance of developing heart disease, lower risk of heart attack, possible improvement of kidney function in severe diabetes, and possible improvement of certain inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis, and kidney disease.
A 14 year long study (Conducted at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston) that was carried out on 80000 American women showed that consuming 3.5 oz of fish once a week reduced stoke risk by 22 %, 2 - 4 times a week by 27 %, and five or more times a week by 52 %.
Although not many large-scale studies have examined this particular issue in men, experts say there is no biological reason that the results of these studies would be different for men.
These studies were published by the American Medical Association in their January journal, 2001 and the benefits of eating fish continue to mount as more studies are conducted.
