Omega 3 Fish Oil
Omega 3 fish oil is the richest source of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. Research has shown that omega 3's can prevent- or accelerate the healing of a big list of diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, depression, skin disorders.
It is highly recommended to decrease the intake of omega 6 fatty acids (from corn, soy, canola and sunflower oil), while increasing the intake of omega 3's. The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is about 3:1. Today, our ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is about 20:1 to 50:1, which is much too high and can cause serious health problems.
Ideal sources for omega 3's are flaxseed oil, walnuts and fish oil. Fish oil is probably the best source of omega 3 fatty acids, because of its high concentration of EPA and DHA, which are 2 of the 3 essential fatty acids that have to provided from external sources.
The third essential fatty acid is Alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is found in flaxseed oil and walnuts. ALA can be split up into DHA and EPA in he body. This process however is relatively ineffective and that's why fish oil supplements or fatty fish (~twice a week) should be part of your diet.
On the other hand you should be careful to limit your fish consumption to about 2 servings per week due to possibly high levels of mercury, PCB's and other toxics in fish due to the pollution of the oceans. To ensure your daily dose of DHA and EPA (~ 650 mg a day), you can supplement your nutrition with omega 3 fish oil pills.
When buying fish oil pills, make sure they are of high quality. I recommend the following brands:
* Living Fuel Omega 3 & E fish oil capsules
* The Carlson's brand of fish oil and cod liver oil
