Certain omega 3 fish oil supplements might cause hiccups and a fishy aftertaste - but that's fortunately pretty much the only side effect of taking omega 3 supplements.
What are hiccups anyway?
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm, the muscle at the bottom of the lungs, begins to spasm. This causes the vocal cords to close quickly, which results in the distinctive sound associated with hiccups.
Here are some possible triggers for hiccups:
* Hot food
* Spicy food
* Strong fumes
* Swallowing air along with your food as a result from eating too fast
Some possibilities how you can control hiccups:
* Hold your breath for 30 to 40 seconds
* Drink a glass of cold water, slowly
* Eat a teaspoon of sugar
* Take a mouthful of water without swallowing, plug both ears, and slowly begin to swallow the water
* Try to hold a paper bag to your mouth and breath in and out for a few minutes
* Suck 2-3 small pieces of fresh ginger
If your hiccup continues for several days, you should see a doctor.
