    Omega 3 Fatty Acids In Cardiovascular Diseases

    The beneficial effects of omega 3 fatty acids in cardiovascular diseases are already known for more than 10 years. Today, research is still discovering new insights on how omega 3's can reduce the risk of heart diseases.

    Until today, studies could prove the following beneficial effects of omega 3 fatty acids in connection with cardiovascular diseases:

    * Decrease the risk of arrhythmias, which can cause sudden cardiac death .
    * Decrease triglyceride levels (bad cholesterol).
    * Lower high blood pressure.
    * Decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque.

    For all these reasons, it's advisable for people with elevated heart disease risk to increase their consumption of omega 3 fatty acids. The most important types of omega 3's are EPA and DHA. These omega 3 fatty aids are found in cold water fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts and other sources.

    The ideal daily dosage of DHA and EPA is about 2000 mg a day. To obtain these relatively high dosages, it's recommended that you eat fish 3 - 4 times a week, combined with the nutrients above, or to supplement your diet with omega 3 fish oil capsules.

    Unfortunately, today many species of fish, like shark and swordfish, are contaminated with mercury, heavy metals and other dioxins, which favors the usage of omega 3 fish oil supplements. Just make sure to select a brand that guarantees their products to be 100% free of impurities and dioxins.

    Several clinical studies have shown that omega-3 supplements can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and also slow the progression of atherosclerosis in coronary patients. These supplements can also be beneficial for people with high triglycerides, who need even larger doses.
