How To Loose Weight With Omega 3
Well, omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid, but we all know that fat makes "fat"! So, how can consuming fatty acids help you to loose weight? Is it possible at all, or just media hype?
First, you have to know that there are different types of fat. Traditional saturated fats (they are solid at room temperature) make you gain weight and they are not beneficial for your health. But there are also unsaturated fatty acids, which are basically divided into 2 different classes:
Monounsaturated fatty acids: In olive oil, nuts, avocados, peanut oils.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids: Sources are Sunflower oil, nuts and seeds, sesame, canola, flaxseed oil, cold water fish.
The second group contains essential fats, such as omega 3 and omega 6 and the best known source of those fatty acids is probably fish oil. These fatty acids not only help you to loose weight, but they are also extremely beneficial for your health.
Numerous studies have shown that they can help to prevent cardiovascular diseases, protect your joints, help to keep cholesterol low… some studies even say that they might prevent certain types of cancer.
Ok, but how can you loose weight with omega 3 ?
The deal here is not to increase your intake of fat, but to substitute saturated and partly monounsaturated fatty acids with polyunsaturated fatty acids - preferably from fish oil, because that's the highest quality omega 3 source. Examples for fish, rich in omega 3 are herring, salmon, tuna and mackerel, but you can also take omega 3 fish oil pills if you prefer.
Research has shown that omega 3 fatty acids help to increase the fat metabolism, which causes more body fat to be burned. But careful, this of course doesn't mean that you should consume 2-3 liters of fish oil per day - this surely wouldn't help you to loose any body weight and for your health it wouldn't be good at all.
The recommended dose is about 2-6 grams of fish oil per day. If you are not sure what would be the right dose for you, I recommend you get advice from a dietician or physician.
