Omega 3 And Weight Loss
Can a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids really help you to loose weight?
Several studies seem to prove the positive effects of omega 3 on weight loss. How can this be possible? Everyone knows that fat is very rich in calories and usually makes you gain weight. But calorie counting isn't the decisive factor in weight loss, the more crucial factor is how easily calories are burned.
Omega 3 seems to stimulate the metabolism, which in turn helps to burn more calories. Another positive side-effect of a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids is its regulatory effect on the blood sugar levels, which decrease the feeling of hunger and so, indirectly contribute to weight loss.
More on omega 3 and weight loss:
Another study compared 2 different groups, where the diet of the first group contained 6g/day of omega 3 fish oil and the diet of the second group contained the equivalent amount of traditional fats and oils (butter, olive oil…).
After 3 weeks, the first group (omega 3) showed a fat metabolism that was ~26% higher than the one of the second group. One of the indicators for the increased weight loss could be the drop of the body insulin level caused by omega 3, which makes it more likely that stored body fat is used as a fuel source.
For optimum weight loss it's important to keep your consumption of saturated fats at a minimum - your overall daily consumption of oils and fats should be around 20% of your total calorie intake. 1 tablespoon of oil ~ 120 Kcal. So, if you want to loose weight, it's surely a positive step forward to substitute some of your intake of traditional saturated fats with omega 3 fish oil or equivalent supplements.
